Walk 8

STARTING POINT - "George A Dragon" Potterne (Ref. 5T995594)

This circular walk being approximately 7 miles long.

Take the road opposite the George & Dragon (See Note-2) Coxhill Lane, pass the turning to the left at Woodbridge House and continue to follow Coxhill Lane which now becomes a byway (PP No.50), after about 130 metres you will pass Sugarwell Farm (See Note-1) on your right, your way now passes between steep wooded banks until a farm track angles off to the right, Waylands Chute. Taking Waylands Chute (PP No.28) to the wooden stile leading in to Waylands Field.
Crossing Waylands Field by keeping the wire fence close to your right until you reach the top boundary fence, here you turn lefthanded again keeping the fence close to your right until you reach a post and rail fence giving access to the path descending down the wooded bank (PP No.31). As you go down through the woodland you have a wonderful panoramic view across the vale. Leaving the wood by the post and rail stile at the bottom of the hill turn left to keep the wood close to your left to yet another post and rail stile, here you turn righthanded following the hedge down to an oak stile leading onto the metalled road (C253) by Wick Farm.
Turn to the left and follow the road for a few metres to a farm gateway, there is no gate (at the time of writing, this gateway gave access to an area used for storing round bales).
From this gateway the path (PP No.12) heads to another gateway in the fence below, from here the path continues in the same direction to pass to the right of a hedge which comes only part way into the field from the left.
At this hedge you change paths to follow path No.10 to your left by keeping the 'short' hedge on your left this leads to a stile in the far corner of the field, a short distance into the next field and another post and rail stile puts you on the path which keeps close to the hedge on your right, about half way across this field you will come to a post and rail stile on your right, this marks the line of path No.8 which approaches from your left to cross path 10 and continue down to the Moat (Path No.8 has not been refurbished as far as the Moat at the time of writing - major bridge work being required).
At this stile turn lefthanded follow path No.8 to the stile at the top of the field and emerge into Stroud Lane by Stroud Hill Farm.
Crossing Stroud Lane take the post and rail stile, and follow path (PP No.18) over the small bridge and through the field gateway to the rear of Stroud Hill Farm, from this gate way the path continues at a slight angle to the right to a stile at the bottom of Grubbe's Wood, climb the woodland path to join the byway which is Coxhill Lane (PP No.50).
Turning lefthanded, follow Coxhill Lane back to your starting point at the George & Dragon.
